equitable access

What exactly is equitable access?

ISTE.org states that Equitable Access is: "Robust and reliable access to current and emerging technologies and digital resources, with connectivity for all students, including those with special needs, teachers, staff and school leaders."

Scheduling:

"The best way to make sure all classes have equitable time to use the technology is by use of an online calendar or a calendar that is up in a lounge for teachers to sign up on."

One writer online suggests that the best way to schedule access to technologies in schools is by the use of a calendar either online or a main visual one in a teacher's lounge:

Kansas University's online "Special Connections" page suggests using the library as a low-stress environment for a student with special accommodations needing access to a magnification machine due to a sight impairment. Of course, this is up to the student and the level of comfortability that he or she sees fit in using this equipment and the ease of mobility of this equipment from classroom to classroom. A Google form is a wonderful tool for keeping track of this item.

The current school district in which I teach allows all students the opportunity to check out a laptop at the beginning of the school year. The school system has hotspots all over town set up with hours of operation extending well into the evenings. We have also partnered with businesses "keeping the lights on after dark" giving students free access to wifi and Internet for the purpose of completing homework as well as after-school programs. This school year, the students were even given the incentive to turn in the device to be fixed free of charge without penalty. As a teacher, this took away a lot of the added stress that was involved from the pressure that I felt fell upon me to extend due dates and come early before school and stay later after school to help students get caught up.
